Nomad Safaris makes a difference in Tanzania
Going on an African safari vacation (to Tanzania, for example) is undoubtedly a life-changing experience – and if you choose to travel with responsible operators who genuinely care about local communities, you can have a positive impact that extends far beyond creating lifelong memories of your time in Africa.
At Journey Beyond, we actively seek out travel partners who share our commitment to sustainability and community upliftment, and we believe that people living close to national parks and reserves should benefit from ecotourism through job creation and an improved standard of living. That’s why we’re proud to support Nomad Safaris – in this blog, you’ll find out how their community and conservation projects are having a positive impact throughout Tanzania.
Two wheels good
Sometimes it’s the simplest ideas that make the biggest difference. A major challenge that many students in rural Tanzania face is the length of their journey to and from school. This often means long walks at the start and end of each day, sometimes in the dark, and arriving too tired to focus on learning. For girls especially, safety considerations can mean missed lessons and a lack of access to opportunities. This year already, Nomad has given out over 30 bicycles to young village learners, dramatically reducing the time it takes them to get to school, and opening up a world of new possibilities.
Paying it forward
Family finances – especially in families with many children – can make it impossible to continue paying school fees beyond primary school. As a result, many young learners in Tanzania receive only a rudimentary education and never get the chance to fulfil their potential. By supporting students with the cost of studying and accommodation, young people living near Mahale Mountains National Park now have the chance to continue learning and growing into the teachers, doctors, engineers and conservation leaders of tomorrow.
Keeping a lookout
Elephants and crops aren’t always a good combination, and community farmers living near national parks and reserves throughout Tanzania can lose a lot of their livelihood to herds of these wonderful but destructive creatures. Nomad Safaris has been helping pastoralists on the fringes of Tarangire National Park through the construction of elephant watch towers, which enable farmers to get early warning of approaching elephants. This can reduce the potential for human/wildlife conflict, and promote harmony between farmers and their big, grey neighbors.
The future of conservation is in safe hands
Tomorrow’s conservation leaders are learning the skills they will need to protect ecosystems and help their communities. Nomad Safaris has been working with a sustainable tourism school near Arusha National Park, sharing real-world insights with the students and inspiring them to pursue their studies and continue on their path towards being future change-makers.
